Activity

Play-Doh Worm Challenge

Materials: Play-Doh, plastic placemat or kitchen counter, pieces of paper, marker

This activity builds fine motor skills and number recognition—a foundation of math.

Ask your child if they’re ready for the Play-Doh worm challenge!

Write the number 3 on a piece of paper. Put it next to a plastic mat. Say the number out loud. Ask your child: Can you make that many worms from Play-Doh?

As your child shapes the worms, realize that you’re helping them build number recognition: That’s their ability to associate “3” with the word “three” with three objects such as Play-Doh worms. Kids who build this skill have a leg up in math! (For older kids, increase the challenge with simple math questions: How many worms would you have left if one slithered away? What if another worm then came to join your three worms?)

When your child has three made worms, do the number exercises again with another number! Repeat as long as your child is interested.

Afterwards, your child can play with the worms. Do they remember any fun facts about worms from the story?

Actividad
