Tell your child that scientists make collections so they can study what they find. Now be rock scientists and take a close look at rocks by sorting them.
Head outside and help your child gather a variety of rocks. Spread them out and talk about their characteristics. What do they look like? How big or small are they?
Now encourage your child to sort the rocks in different ways: by color, by size, and by weight. Are there other sorting categories your child can think of, such as sparkly and dull?
