Storytelling Activity
Tell a Trickster Story

Children will use their imagination to make up their own folktales.
Explain that A Story, A Story is an African folktale. A folktale is a made-up story that teaches a lesson or tells how something happened. Folktales are important to many people from countries in Africa. In a lot of African folktales, Anansi tries to trick people. Sometimes in the stories, Anansi is a spider!
Then say that you will work together to come up with another Anansi story! Start with “Once upon a time . . .” and have your child continue. Encourage your child to keep going by asking questions, like what characters feel or what comes next. Write down the story as you and your child come up with it. When you’re done, have your child draw an illustration to go along with it!

Entonces, dile a tu niño o niña que van a trabajar juntos para crear otro cuento de Anansi. Comienza con: “Érase una vez...”, y deja que tu niño continúe. Hazle preguntas, como qué sienten los personajes o qué es lo que pasa después, para animarlo a seguir creando el cuento. Escribe el cuento según se lo vayan inventando. Cuando terminen, ¡haz que tu niño dibuje una ilustración que vaya con el cuento!
